Palm Beach Gardens Tornado: An Unprecedented Disaster

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida – On the evening of April 29, 2023, a powerful EF-2 tornado with maximum winds of 130 mph touched down in the northern part of Palm Beach County, causing significant damage to homes and properties in the area.
According to the National Weather Service, the tornado that hit Palm Beach Gardens started on the east side of I-95 and moved northeast, causing the most significant damage to the Sanctuary Cove neighborhood. It passed south of the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center and then crossed PGA Boulevard near the intersection with U.S. 1. The tornado continued up U.S. 1 for a short time before dissipating before it could reach Juno Beach.
The tornado impacted numerous communities, causing damage to homes and uprooting large trees, as well as overturning cars and boats. The Sanctuary Cove neighborhood experienced the most significant impact, with shattered windows, debris strewn across the streets, and cracked tree limbs resting on vehicles and homes. Furthermore, one apartment building had part of its roof torn off.
According to the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, there were no reported deaths or major injuries from the tornado. However, there are several intersections without electricity, and several major roads, including PGA Blvd. and U.S. 1 east of the intracoastal waterway, are still closed due to the damage caused by the storm. Palm Beach Gardens city engineers and building officials are currently assessing the structural damage in the affected areas.
