Water leaks at home can be very difficult to spot. You may not realize you have a leak until you have an unexpectedly high water bill.

Clogged Pipe

A clogged pipe that is left unattended increases the pressure in the drain, causing water to strain the plumbing.

Plumbing fixtures and pipes are designed to transfer water pressure from one place to another within a certain range. Clogged pipes or drains can increase this pressure beyond acceptable limits. This can cause line problems, damaged connections, and leaks in multiple locations. Many clogs can be cleared with plungers or off-the-shelf drain cleaning products, but clogs that stand up to your efforts need immediate attention from a licensed plumber.

Broken Seal

Rubber seals can be seen everywhere in your plumbing systems. They connect pipes to fixtures and appliances at home. You’ll see the seal in places, such as faucets, the door of your dishwasher, and washing machine.

Over time, these rubber seals deteriorate. As these seals wear, they can loosen and even fall out. If there are puddles under the faucet or appliance, the seal may be broken. A broken seal doesn’t take long to fix, but it does require the right tools and seal size — which you will need a licensed plumber.

Corrosion

As a plumbing system ages, rust and other forms of corrosion can erode the pipes. If the pipe is discolored or warped, have a plumber evaluate the damage immediately. If you have an older plumbing system, consider replacing pipes that are at higher risk of corrosion with newer models.

Excess Water Pressure

High water pressure may feel good, but excessive or uneven pressure can strain your pipes. Aside from potentially increasing your water bills, and causing damage to your appliances, a high water pressure can seriously damage pipes, especially old pipes. The pipe may break or crack easily. Ultimately, leaks can cause waste and damage.
