What there is to do
Walk the shoreline and watch the water
The park’s biggest draw is the harbor. Visitors come for the view, for sunsets, and to watch for birds. Herons, ospreys, and ibis are commonly reported there, along with the occasional dolphin or manatee in the water nearby. Early morning tends to be quieter for birdwatching.
Fish from the pier
The city lists a fishing pier and an observation deck. Fishing rules and license requirements are set by the State of Florida, so check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission before you cast a line.
Launch a boat or paddle
The park has a boat ramp, and paddlers often start from here to explore the creek and the harbor shoreline. Ask the city about ramp fees and any limits on use.
Picnic and play
There are picnic tables, stationary grills, and pavilions, plus a playground. If you want to use a covered area for a larger gathering, ask the city whether reservations are available.
Walk the mangrove boardwalk
A short boardwalk loop through mangroves has been one of the park’s best-known features. Sections have been closed at times, so confirm that it is open before you plan a visit around it.

Getting there and parking
From downtown Punta Gorda, follow Marion Avenue west, past Fishermen’s Village, until it ends at the park. The city lists parking at the park. Weekends, holidays, and sunset can be busy, so allow extra time.
Peace River Wildlife Center
The Peace River Wildlife Center has been based at Ponce de Leon Park for years. It rescues and rehabilitates native Florida wildlife, and birds and other animals that cannot be released stay on site for viewing and education.
The center has been planning a move to a new site on West Henry Street, so don’t assume it’s still on the grounds. Check prwildlife.org or call before you plan a visit around it.

Tips for your visit
- Check before you drive. Confirm that the areas you want are open.
- Go early or late. Mornings are quieter, and the light on the water is good near sunset.
- Bring what you need. Sun protection, water, and bug repellent are useful on the shoreline. Binoculars help for birds.
- Keep an eye on children near the water.
- Take your trash with you and leave wildlife alone.
